The Hopefields landslide resulted from the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. The landslide is primarily a block slide having moved downslope on mudstone bedding. The slide dammed a minor tributary of the Stanton River, and a lake formed behind the dam. The lake is still present as the mudstone is relatively impermeable and it will take some time to be eroded.
